Passing on Heritage-UPDATE

 Well me and the little one didn't see a damn thing on Sat.

The pic is of my oldest daughter.  We saw some does right at day break heading to a oak patch.  well come 0830, they decided to use the same route back.

Yep...complacency makes you prey.

Anyhoo...

The first to go by was a big 8 point.  She got a case buck fever and missed.

About 5 min later, she says, here comes 3.  She saw their legs through the brush.

She was trying to get the gun up on the shooting stick (we were in a ground blind) and not spook them.

She dropped the doe first.....BAM...D-E-D   dead.

The little nub'n buck ran back about 20' and started looking around.  He stood still to long...BAM  #2 down.

The 3rd on was behind some cedars or she would of had 3.

The 62gr. federal fusion in 223 did not piss around.  Pencil size hole in and about dime on the exit.  No race & trace to worry about.

Even better...these were her first deer.

I am a proud papa.  :)

Time to heat the grease up for some fried backstrap.

This weekend is the is youth gun opening for deer here in Texas.

As such, I will have all 3 of my daughters in the woods this weekend and at every chance during the regular season that opens the 1st weekend in Nov.

With this time well spent, the stories of times past get handed down as well as new stories made for them to pass on to their kids (when they are older AND married).

All 3 also take part in the processing of the animals harvested.

Funny story....several months ago we were on the way home from Wally World.  My youngest (8 yrs old) was oogling some of the hunting magazines there.  Yes, I was smiling.  

So we were about 1/2 way home when she spied a mess of buzzards along the roadside.  They were eating a deer that had been hit.  She wanted me to go back and get it so we could cook it.

Her reasoning was that most of it was there and she wanted some venison.  :)

So she has been counting down the days til she drops one.

It was released in 2008, so it was more than likely shot around the 2006 time frame.  Before the chocolate milk dick sucker made any babbling of wanting to live in the house of cracker in the swamp.

Dallas police say a member of the department died Monday afternoon in what apparently was an accident involving his weapon.

Officer Christoper Pasley was at his home on Sierra Blanca Drive in far south Fort Worth when the incident was reported around 3:20 p.m.

"Officer Pasley died as a result of an apparent accidental discharge while cleaning his weapon at home today," Dallas police chief David Brown said in a written statement.

The stupid ones don't last long

The officers entered the home and made their way to a bedroom. Before entering the bedroom they called out the subject's name but were met with gunfire through the bedroom door. Officer O'Rourke was struck by the gunfire and critically wounded. He was transported to McLaren Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.

The subject remains barricaded inside of the home.

To whom it may concern:

Thank you for voicing your concerns regarding the Special Reaction Team
training.  In 2007 the Department of Defense identified a requirement to
provide better security and policing for our military installations in the
US amidst the regular deployment cycle for missions abroad.  The decision to
hire civilian police officers into the armed forces was made in order to
free up our trained military policemen to deploy without having to sacrifice
security at home.  In return, their civilian counterparts would be
integrated alongside Marine military policemen to provide security and
policing within the continental US as a blended force.

As you may already know, Special Reaction Team (SRT) training is similar to
Special Weapons and Tactics training in the civilian sector.  Both courses
are designed to teach law enforcement tactics that can be incorporated into
their unit's mission.  While these techniques are useful in the Global War
on Terror, they are also employed close to home in response to a variety of
threats to our Marine Corps Installations.  These tactics are not designed
for use against the average US citizen, but for persons who pose a threat to
the United States and/or the Marine Corps.

The civilian and military policemen chosen to participate in SRT training
are among the best, most highly qualified members of Marine Corps
Installation law enforcement units.  The individuals selected for SRT are
recommended by their respective unit to participate in a three-week course
offered at either Fort Leonard Wood, an army base, or the Marine Corps
Police Academy East located at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.  Those
civilian police officers that undergo the training are actually employed by
the United States Marine Corps to be a part of a SRT.  That SRT training
certifies personnel to be a member of a Marine Corps SRT team.

The phrase, "Every Marine is a rifleman," rings as true as the phrase,
"Every civilian military police officer is a Marine."  The civilians hired
into our armed forces are trained alongside our service members in an effort
to accomplish the same mission, which is to protect the citizens of the
United States no matter the circumstance or the location.

Making Buckskin

This year I am going to attempt (the optimal word here) to brain tan the hides of the deer I harvest and make buckskin.  I figure deer hide is thicker and more forgiving that rabbit or fox.  Plus it would take a kajillion of them to make a suit.

While there are many commercial processes available to tan the hides, brain tanning is the ancient way I will go.  Gen 3:21   Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

During my research the past several months into this adventure, I have come to learn that each animal has enough brain to tan their own hides.  Even the stupid ones. 



The smoking process is what allows the buckskin to get wet and still be able to be used/worn.  Plus buckskin is a very durable product that can take some abuse.

The wife is not real keen on this, but my youngest is excited about it.  We saw a deer that had been hit along side the road a couple of weeks ago and she wanted to stop and get it.  Needles to say, by the smell, it had been in the Texas sun for several days with some vultures perched on it.

This is one of those projects that even if the world doesn't go tits up, it is still a valuable skillset to have.

Steps of Braintanning

1. Obtain and flesh hide. This entails scraping all the meat and fat from the flesh side of the skin. Care now makes the job easier later.

2. Buck (de-hair) hide in a solution of 6 to 8 ounces of Red Devil Lye to 20 gallons of water until the hair slips easily.

3. Using a fleshing beam and tool, grain and membrane the hide, being careful to cover the complete unit.

4. Soak the hide in a flowing creek or mild vinegar water to remove lye.

5. Wring hide completely, removing as much water as possible.

6. Mix up a dressing by mixing one gallon of warm water (not over 120 F) with one of the following:

• one dozen eggs
• one brain from animal you are tanning
• ¼ cup oil (olive or neat’s-foot) and ¼ bar Ivory soap

7. Work hide in the dressing until thoroughly saturated.

8. Wring as much liquid from hide as possible using a stake, tree or post. You can help wring with a stick if it helps.

9. Work hide in dressing till thoroughly saturated. (You cannot overdress a hide!!)

10. Wring as much liquid from hide as possible.

11. Sew up any holes at this time.

12. Using a cable, breaking post, or combination, work the hide until it is soft and completely dry. This is the most important step of brain tanning and controls the outcome of your finished product. Make sure you work all parts of the hide, in all directions to keep the fibers separated. Constant working is not necessary, however all fibers must be stretched in both directions every 30 to 45 minutes. To fail to do so will cause hard spots in the hide. This can take from 4 to 10 hoursdepending on hide thickness, work area temperature, and humidity.

13. When the hide is completely dry and soft, sew into a sock shape, smoke till smoke stains saturate thickest parts of hide, turn wrong side out and repeat.

14. Admire your work, rub it, smell it, enjoy it.
