Feral hogs are a menacing problem across Texas, and the folks at Wulf Outdoor Sports are making an organized effort to do something about it. The company’s 2nd Annual Wild Hog Round-Up set for April 11-21 is offering big prize money to registered contestants who remove the most and biggest hogs in a 20-county area across East Texas.

The only thing missing is a smoker going at the weigh in's.

Last year they removed 700+ hogs on this contest.  With the spring rains that we have had, it's gonna be a bumper crop of hogs this year.

Main prize is $10k

The pig problem here in East Texas and through out the state is bad.  Last year alone they did $400M in damages to property.

The city of Center, Tx has ponied up $5k to whoever kills the most pigs in Shelby county.

A recent media report raised questions about detectives taking cheek swabs last week from a handful of students at Albert Einstein Middle School without parental consent. Funk-Haslam was an eighth-grader at the school.

On Tuesday, detectives told The Bee that they have taken DNA swabs from students on that campus as well as others on a few occasions since the girl was found beaten, stabbed and asphyxiated in a baseball diamond dugout March 6.

Sheriff's detectives said that in each case, the minor gave consent following a lengthy explanation about the reason for the swab and how it would be used. They said parental permission is not necessary in such cases, and that they believe each student who gave DNA was capable of consenting.

"(Minors) need to be at an age where there is an understanding of what is being asked," said detective Ken Clark. "We take the collection of DNA very seriously."

The Pentagon has put in an order for prototype contact lenses that give users a much wider field of vision.

The lenses are designed to be paired with compact head-up display (HUD) units - glasses that allow images to be projected onto their lenses.

Broiler Adventure-The Finale

We wrapped up the broiler project today.


We went from nice, cute fuzzy, chicks.

To a 7-8lb live bird in 6 weeks.  That's putting on the weight.

Between week 4 & 5 they put on a average of 1.3lbs

They can't fly so transport was easy

We wound up with a 5-6lb dressed bird.

It took the processor ( 4 guys) 70 minutes from the start of the kill to me driving out to do 56 birds.  They have done 7000+ birds since Jan this year.

The cost comparison is probably about $1-$1.50 more that a store bought bird, depending on where you live.  The bonus you know what went into them.  The cost would be about the same, but these were shown at our county livestock show.

They were fed 30% Turkey starter from day 1 to 3 weeks.  Then from we went to 26% Broiler finisher w/ a 12% fat content to finish.  The last week they were fed chicken scratch to clean out the insides.

Big plump birds with a nice reddish skin.

Time to fire up the deep fryer.
