Northside Independent School District plans to track students next year on two of its campuses using technology implanted in their student identification cards in a trial that could eventually include all 112 of its schools and all of its nearly 100,000 students.
District officials said the Radio Frequency Identification System (RFID) tags would improve safety by allowing them to locate students — and count them more accurately at the beginning of the school day to help offset cuts in state funding, which is partly based on attendance.

nonprofit taxpayer watchdog organization funded by Ford, Surdna and
other major foundations, identifies 16 states that let companies divert
some or all of the state income taxes deducted from workers’ paychecks.
None of the states requires notifying the workers, whose withholdings
are treated as taxes they paid.
General Electric, Goldman Sachs, Procter
& Gamble, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors and AMC Theatres enjoy
deals to keep state taxes deducted from their workers’ paychecks, the
report shows. Foreign companies also enjoy such arrangements, including
Electrolux, Nissan, Toyota and a host of Canadian, Japanese and European
banks, Good Jobs First says.

Sanford judge rules in favor of motorist who flashed his headlights
A judge in Sanford ruled Tuesday that a Lake Mary man was lawfully exercising his First Amendment rights when he flashed his headlights to warn neighbors that a deputy had set up a speed trap nearby.He was ticketed Aug. 10 by a Seminole County deputy, but Kintner alleges the officer misapplied a state law designed to ban motorists from flashing after-market emergency lights.
Circuit Judge Alan Dickey earlier ruled that that state law does not apply to people who did what Kintner did, use his headlights to communicate.
On Tuesday the judge went a step further, saying people who flash their headlights to communicate are engaging in behavior protected by the U.S. Constitution.

The doctoring Wednesday was part of a military program to provide free health care in poor areas of the South and whose latest mission came to one of Alabama's most impoverished regions, where the teams have treated more than 12,000 people in less than two weeks. The work helps fill a gap in an area with few doctors and a multitude of medical problems, many of them linked to the obesity that is rampant in the state.

Drones may soon be flying over Austin crime scenes.Officers spent the day in College Station learning how to use the technology.At first glance, it looks like a child’s toy.
It’s actually an $80,000 military drone. There are 250 of these models being used in Afghanistan.
Manufacturers of the unmanned aerial vehicles or UAVs are now marketing them to law enforcement.
Members of the APD Technology Unit traveled to Texas A&M to learn how to use them.
Officers expect the FAA to limit the flights to a height of 200 feet with the restriction of always keeping the aircraft within view.
With a battery life of about 30 minutes, officers say flying it around the city would be impossible.

Giving Somebody the Finger
This is just to good to pass up.
JACKSON, Mich. -- A Michigan teen finishing off an Arby’s roast beef sandwich chomped down on something tough that tasted like rubber, so he spit it out.
Turns out it tasted like finger. The fleshy, severed pad of an unfortunate employee’s finger, apparently.
Ryan Hart, 14, told the Jackson Citizen Patriot on Wednesday that once he got a good look at it, he knew right away what had been in the junior roast beef sandwich he was eating last Friday.
"I was like, ‘That (has) to be a finger,"’ Hart said. "I was about to puke. ... It was just nasty."
The employee apparently cut her finger on a meat slicer and left her station without immediately telling anyone, said Steve Hall, the environmental health director for the Jackson County health department. Her co-workers continued filling orders until they found out what had happened, he said.

HOUSTON – Dozens of people have gathered outside the Harris County Courthouse protest the not guilty verdict in the Andrew Blomberg trial.
Blomberg, a former Houston cop, was on trial for the videotaped beating of teen burglar Chad Holley. A jury cleared him Wednesday.
The protesters carried signs, chanted and prayed on the steps of the downtown courthouse.
Several black activisits spoke to the crowd.

How many of us remember riding in one of these. My parents had this exact model.
Riding in the very back was the seat we fought over.
The window down, the exhaust being sucked in.
That was to fun life.
Or this...Riding on the back dash of the car.
We had a '74 Delta 88. Man I could lay full out on that.
No seat belts.
My dad had a '76 El Camino that the 5 of us used to ride in.
Hell he used to put a camper shell on it, take out the back glass and we would take family vacations. Us kids would ride in the bed. The only thing we worried about was hitting our heads on the camper top roof and having to pee in a cup cause dad didn't want to stop.
So I saw this pic on the UK Daily Mail and it brought back a lot of old & good memories.

Two weekends ago I attended a showing of The Avengers at the Regal Shiloh Crossing Stadium 18 in Avon, Indiana. I’d open carried at this theater several times with no problem. When I went to buy a ticket at the window the ticket taker asked me to leave my weapon in my car. He made this “suggestion” over the microphone in front of about fifty people. I asked to speak to a manager, who confirmed that this was the theater’s policy. So I called their corporate offices to make double sure that this was indeed their position . . .
I had a lengthy, cordial and somewhat strange conversation with a gentleman at the corporate offices. I would be hard-pressed to relay the conversation other than to note that his impression of legal firearm owners was exceedingly poor. I would imagine most of his information came from a source indistinguishable from The Brady Campaign.
When I suggested that he was missing out on making his theaters safer by allowing legal firearm owners to carry he made several disparaging ‘gun toting yahoo’ type remarks and insisted that allowing guns in the theater would keep the theater from being a ‘family friendly’ environment.
If anyone feels compelled to let them know how you feel.

Stocks declined in the final hour of trading Tuesday following a report that a transcript from the Greek meeting showed deposits leaving the banking system, fueling speculation that the nation might leave the euro zone.
According to the transcript, Greek depositors withdrew 700 million euro from the nation's local banks recently, said President Karolos Papoulias, though the exact timing of the transfer was unclear.
